Enable Second Ram Slot

If only two of the blue memory slots are populated with matched DIMMs, dual-channel mode is enabled.

I've been having RAM issues and can't find any fixes for the problem I have. At some point last year, I noticed in my system information it said for Installed Memory: 6.00 GB (4.00 GB usable). I wasn't sure what the problem was or if Windows 7 was just using 2GB to run. However, recently I decided to purchase 12GB of RAM (3x4GB) and when I installed it, I got Installed Memory: 18.0 GB (6.00 GB usable).
  1. I removed sticks from slots 1 & 2. The computer works with the 4gb on slots 3 & 4, I guess all the slots are OK two. I tried with 4x8gb sticks I have from another computer. With 32gb, the bios tells me 16gb available and slots 3 & 4 empty. So the cpu can handle at least 16gb. CPU-Z find the 4 sticks and all the memory that is set up.
  2. OOBE, 4 GB RAM installed on the PC by default. I am looking to upgrade the RAM to 16GB. Before doing that, I wanted to check both the RAM slots, (motherboard has only 2 RAM slots.) I placed the 4GB RAM on the secondary slot and the PC did not boot or detect RAM.
  3. Insert the RAM into the RAM slot. Line up the notch in the stick of RAM to the break in the slot. Set the stick into the slot and then apply equal pressure onto the stick until the clamps on the side click and lock the RAM in. You may have to apply a fair amount of pressure, but never force it in.

I went into BIOS and saw that it sees all the memory in all 6 slots. But, only slots 1-3 are enabled. What's weirder is that slot 2 has a 4GB stick, but only 2GB is enabled. I don't see any option within BIOS to enable the slots or individually increase each RAM voltage.

How To Enable Second Ram Slot

Hi Guys,
I've got an Asus P5B Deluxe motherboard. Today I tried adding some new RAM to take it from 4GB to 8GB. The board is about 6 years' old. I've never used the black RAM slots before, only the yellow ones (2x2GB in slots 1 and 3).
My system only sees 6GB, not 8GB. I've tried various combinations of the RAM, get the same result.
To check the new RAM wasn't defective, I tried it in slot 1, a known good slot. All 4 sticks of RAM worked in slot 1, so the RAM wasn't faulty.
All 4 sticks work in every slot except slot 2 (the first black RAM slot). If I put any stick in slot 2 - old or new - the PC is dead, it won't even boot to the BIOS.
So it looks like I have a defective RAM slot.
Does anyone know of any way to fix this? The board is too old to RMA. I've tried an emery board down the defective slot, and I've tried squirting WD40 down it. No improvement.
Does anyone have any other ideas on how to get that bad slot working?
Thanks!
